The Inspiring Story of Hillary

My name is Hillary and I was born in the Ngando area. My family and I stayed there until we moved to Wanyee Road when I was about 10 years old. I have vivid memories of living with my parents and siblings and my father, a strict man, did not allow my mother to work, so she was a housewife while my father was a watch guard.

Growing up, my mother did not have much time for me as she was taking care of my younger siblings, so one day she left the house and I decided to explore the neighborhood. That’s when I encountered a group of friends playing at a school compound and I decided to join them. I later learned that this was where the Saturday program for Ngong Road Children’s Foundation was being held at that time. I kept on coming back until I was lucky to be selected for an interview. I passed the interview and joined the program in  2012 and at that time I was in grade 4.

Since then, I have achieved a lot academically and in other areas. I have received awards for good academic performances and I have also had the honor of serving as a leader during the camps held between 2017 and 2019. I did well in my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and I joined Dagoretti High School, a provincial-level boys’ high school in the Dagoretti area in 2017. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I completed high school a year later than I was to complete.

In September 2021, I joined Moi University to pursue a bachelor’s degree course in Social Work. I have a genuine passion for creating the best possible conditions for people’s success and that is why I chose this particular course. Before joining Moi University, I was trained as a Youth Peer Provider (YPP) by the program and I have since been facilitating Sexual Reproductive Health talks amongst my peers and younger students in the program. I take pride in knowing that I am directly contributing to raising awareness, especially among teenagers. I am currently the chairperson for the YPP group.

I am also currently on internship at Ngong Road Children’s Foundation under the Secondary department. I am fulfilled because I am not only putting into practice what I am learning in school but it is also a way for me to give back to the NRCF community. I aspire to complete my degree and hopefully take a master’s as I want to also become a lecturer. I am grateful to the NRCF program for impacting my life positively through the provision of quality education.

Transform a life.

Miracle’s Educational Journey and Future Aspirations

My name is Miracle, and I am 14 years old. I live in Ngando, a slum in Nairobi with my mother, stepdad, and younger brother. Both my parents are casual laborers. I joined the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation program in 2019 while in fifth grade. It was a turning point in my life. The program provided me with an opportunity to excel academically and pursue my dreams.

It was at the program that I joined the Nelson Mandela School, which gave me a sense of purpose. I felt inspired and motivated to become a better version of myself. I was a hardworking student and my hard work and dedication paid off when I sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2022 and performed above average.

I knew that I wanted to continue my education and pursue my dream of becoming a surgeon. In 2023, I joined St. Teresa’s Girls Kithinu in Embu County, where I am currently studying. I am determined to excel academically, and I have joined the environmental club to learn more about nature and how to take care of the environment. My dream is to get an A- grade and join Moi University to study medicine. I want to become a surgeon and make a difference in people’s lives. I believe that education is the key to success, and I am willing to work hard to achieve my goals.

I also want to travel and invest in medical facilities. I want to help people who cannot afford medical care and make a difference in their lives. I believe that I can achieve my dreams, and I will make sure I make that dream come true.

My journey has not been easy, but I am grateful for the opportunities that the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation program has provided me. It has given me purpose and optimism, and I am determined to make the most of it. I want to inspire other children who are facing similar challenges to believe in themselves and work hard towards achieving their dreams.

Transform a life today by sponsoring a child.

Peter’s Inspiring Journey

My name is Peter, and I am a post-secondary student at the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF). I grew up in the Ngando region with my siblings, and our guardians, my uncle, and aunt, raised us until recently, when my aunt relocated to the upcountry, and we now live with my uncle. My guardians worked odd jobs to make ends meet, and they were frequently unable to satisfy our basic requirements, let alone pay our school tuition. My educational goals were realized when I joined the NRCF program.

I joined the NRCF when I was in fourth grade. I was enrolled in Nelson Mandela School, which is near my house, so I didn’t have to walk far to school. I worked really hard because I wanted to acquire good marks so that I could attend an excellent high school. Taekwondo was another extracurricular activity I participated in. In 2017, I took the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and scored a decent grade. In 2018, I enrolled in Hospital Hill High School, an extra-county boys’ high school in Nairobi. I played rugby, handball, and football as part of my extracurricular activities. They kept me busy throughout high school.

After graduating from high school in 2021, I was offered the opportunity to train as a Youth Peer Provider (YPP) in the program in July 2022. This was a great chance for me because I would be teaching my classmates and younger students in the program about the fundamentals of sexual and reproductive health. I was also working as an operations associate at Karibu Loo to keep myself occupied while I waited to start college. My job was to make sure that the restrooms were clean during social events. I was also helping at the NRCF on Saturdays.

In September, I enrolled at Thika Technical Training Institute for a diploma study in Social and Community Development. My desire to become a social worker and aid the community, particularly children, motivated me to pursue this degree. My program lasts three years, and I aim to work for a non-governmental organization such as NRCF, Red Cross, or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

I am grateful to the NRCF program for ensuring that I pursue my educational goals. In the future, I would like to sponsor a student from the program and create a similar organization to help transform the lives of other children.

Transform a life today.

George’s Educational Journey

My name is George and I am 15 years old. I live with my parents in the Kabiria area and I have 2 siblings. My mother is a tailor and my father is a mechanic at a local shop in my neighborhood. The income from my parents was not enough to comfortably keep my siblings and me in school and provide for our basic needs. Getting an opportunity to join Ngong Road Children’s Foundation was a lifelong dream for my educational success.

I joined the NRCF program in 2016 when I was in grade 3. Before joining, I was schooling at Masters Academy in Kabiria but I was moved to Jagiet Academy which is one of the program’s focus schools. I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 2021 and got above-average marks. I then joined Friends School Bukembe Secondary in Kanduyi constituency in Bungoma County in 2022.

I am currently in Form two and I love being a student there. I especially love attending practical lessons at the lab for Biology and Chemistry subjects and I am also involved in extra-curricular activities such as football and the debate club. I am working hard to ensure that I get good grades in my exams and be able to get into University once I am done with my high school education.

I aspire to join the University of Nairobi and pursue a course in Aeronautical Engineering. I have always had an interest in planes and since my father is a mechanic, I developed an interest in working with different tools. He is my role model and I hope to become even better at working with tools. I am grateful to the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF) program for believing in me and taking me through my education and I hope to achieve my educational dreams and make myself and them proud.

Asumpta’s educational journey

My name is Asumpta and I am 15 years of age. I live with my mother, a single parent, and my younger brother. My mother, despite being a single parent, has always provided for my brother and me by performing odd jobs around the neighborhood. She battled to keep us in school, but happily, I got the opportunity to join Ngong Road Children’s Foundation, and my education journey path took a positive path.

I joined the NRCF program in 2017 when I was in grade 3 after successfully passing my interview. I then joined Nelson Mandela, one of the program’s focus schools. I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2022 and scored good grades to join high school. At the beginning of this year, I joined St.Albertina Kiongwani Girls High School, a county-level girls’ high school.

So far, I have loved being a student at the school. I spend my free time in the computer lab doing my assignments or carrying out my personal studies and research. I also joined the journalism club because I would want to take a journalism course once I get into college. My role model in the journalism industry is Lulu Hassan, a Kenyan journalist and news anchor at Citizen TV. I also got the chance to interact with one of the program’s alumna, Sallyanne, who graduated in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. She really inspired me because she not only successfully completed the journalism program, but also graduated with first-class honors. She also gave me a few tips on how to prepare myself for the course.

I am grateful to the NRCF program for giving me the chance to pursue my academic ambitions and to my sponsor for always ensuring that everything I need in school is catered for. I want to one day be able to give back to the program by sponsoring a child as well to enable them to transform their life as well.
